Chandler is a plein air painter, painting outside and on location. Many of his painting are inspired by his travels, keeping his paintings fresh and exciting. He documents his travels on site on small panels, recording color, light and shadow, as well as the spatial relationships of the scenes. Back in the studio, Chandler uses these studies to create larger paintings. The most obvious feature of Chandler's paintings is his unrestricted use of color; his palette is a conscious deviation from nature. By placing very cool colors next to very warm colors (Something which rarely happens in nature) he creates tension in the composition. It is the extreme contrast that infuses his paintings with a vibrant quality. While his artwork remains rooted in literal reality, it also masks unseen forces that challenge the boundaries of his subjects; buildings undulate, skies and sidewalks are wildly dappled, perspectives seem to head towards some extraordinary culmination.

Chandler has a background in architecture from Cooper Union and painting from the Art Student’s league. Both institutions are in New York City, a city to which he remains greatly attached. He is a serious student of music having studied for ten years under the Principal Percussionist of the New York Philharmonic. As a college student, he began making animated films which led to the creation of a film for the American Symphony Orchestra. He also studied ancient typefaces and illuminated manuscripts in museums throughout Europe. His rich and varied background wonderfully enhances and enlivens his artistic vision while providing great reservoir for inspiration.
